WENATCHEE – The Wenatchee AppleSox saw their brief two-game winning streak come to an end on Friday night with a 3-1 loss to the undefeated Walla Walla Sweets in the opening game of a weekend trio at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.
After spotting Walla Walla the first run of the contest in the first inning, Wenatchee held the Sweets in check long enough to tie the score in the fourth on an RBI-single by second-baseman Quinn Ayers.
From there, the game remained knotted up at 1-1 until the ninth, when AppleSox relief pitcher Logan Chase surrendered a two-run dinger that proved to be the eventual difference in the Sweets 3-1 victory.
Wenatchee starting pitcher Gavin Gorrell tossed five strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits, walking four and striking out five in garnering a no-decision, while Chase absorbed the loss.
The Sox limited Walla Walla to only five hits in the game and produced eight of their own, including two each from right-fielder Tyler Detloff and third-baseman Brett Gillis.
The loss dropped Wenatchee to a record of 3-7 on the season, which keeps them in fifth place in the West Coast Collegiate League’s North Division, 3 ½ games behing the front-running Yakima Valley Pippins.
The AppleSox and Sweets will play game two of their weekend series on Saturday night.
