VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA – After winning game one of their West Coast Collegiate League (WCCL) North Division Championship series with the Victoria HarbourCats on Tuesday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium, the Wenatchee AppleSox dropped game two on the road Wednesday evening by the final count of 7-2.
Wenatchee opened the scoring in the top of the first when center-fielder Jashaun Simon scored on an error by Victoria shortstop Gus Wilson to give the Sox a 1-0 lead after a half-inning of play.
The HarbourCats promptly tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning when Wilson made good on his earlier error by socking a solo home run.
In the top of the third, the AppleSox grabbed the lead back at 2-1 on a fielder’s choice that brought home second-baseman Spencer Marenco.
From there, however, the game belonged entirely to Victoria, who swiftly tallied a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third to take their first lead of the contest at 3-2, and went on to add three more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth before closing out the night with a 7-2 victory.
Seth Kuykendall started the game and absorbed the loss for Wenatchee, tossing six innings and giving up seven runs on as many hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Sox loss evened the best-of-three series at one game apiece, and sets up a winner-take-all contest on Thursday night at Royal Athletic Park with a trip to the WCCL Championship on the line.
