WENATCHEE — Seattle mountaineer Varun Sadavarte, who fell during a climb on Mount Stuart on Sunday, died by accident from head and chest injuries, Chelan County Coroner Wayne Harris said.

Harris said he judged the cause and manner of death from an external examination of Sadavarte's body, and was working with the climber's family to return his body to India, where his parents reside.

Sadavarte fell about 100 feet at 11:47 a.m. while descending the mountain, about 14 miles southwest of Leavenworth. His body was recovered by helicopter from about 8,900 feet up on the southeast aspect.

Sadavarte's climbing partner, who was uninjured, was also transported down by air. The climber told Chelan County sheriff's deputies Sadavarte lost his footing and slid on the way down after successfully summiting Stuart earlier in the day.
