EAST WENATCHEE – A pair of roundabouts which were scheduled to be installed at two busy intersections in East Wenatchee will not be moving forward.
According to East Wenatchee Mayor Steve Lacy, the projects slated for Ninth Street’s crossings at Valley Mall Pkwy. and State route 28 (SR-28), have been cancelled due to financial concerns.
Initial estimates for their construction had already exceeded both the city and state’s expectations and the construction was officially deemed unfeasible after a new cost projection was issued by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
In lieu of the roundabouts, the city will utilize federal funding it has already secured to build a new set of traffic signals at the intersection of Ninth and Valley Mall Pkwy. and synchronize them with the existing signals at Ninth and SR-28.
The WSDOT will also be working with the city to help with the implementation of enhanced sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and bike routes.
