COLVILLE - Evacuation levels have been lowered as the about 45,350-acre Williams Flats Fire is now 50 percent contained.
Only Level 1 evacuations remain for the areas south of Four Corners and on or near the shoreline of Lake Roosevelt along the Ninemile-Hellgate Road, according to fire officials.
Fire crews will continue to demobilize and return home as the number of personnel assigned to the blaze has dropped from about 1,000 to 800 Tuesday morning.
Crews are working to repair roads damaged during the weekend storms to provide safe access to the fire. The west and southwest flanks of the fire are secure and patrols will continue throughout Tuesday. Along the north flank, firefighters are working to repair work along dozer lines and strengthen existing containment lines and are hoping to finish the containment line on the south flank, according to fire officials.
Road closures remain at the junction of Silver Creek Road and Ninemile-Hellgate Road, Olds Creek Road and Ninemile-Frosty Meadows Road, and Silver Creek Road and Kuehne Road.
The Williams Flats fire was first reported on the morning of Aug. 2 and was caused by lightning.
