MOSES LAKE - WorkSource in Moses Lake is holding a rapid response event July 17 for REC Silicon employees as layoffs are underway, with a likely long-term shutdown of the facility by next week.
Information about unemployment benefits, trade adjustment assistance, retraining, job search assistance and more will be available at either 9 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. on July 17 at the WorkSource Center, located at 309 E. Fifth Ave.
Layoffs of about 150 employees began this week at the REC Silicon facility in Moses Lake as the plant is expected to be shut down long-term by July 15. REC Silicon officials have not yet commented on this week’s layoffs but more information is expected soon.
The company had previously announce the facility would be shutdown by June 30 if access to the polysilicon markets in China were not restored. The company’s board of directors decided to delay the shutdown to mid-July, in hopes the U.S. and China could move toward a resolution to the ongoing trade war that has essentially blocked REC Silicon from the Chinese market.
Production at the Moses Lake facility was halted in mid-May. Company officials previously stated a long-term shutdown would result in layoffs of the remaining workforce in Moses Lake.
