MOSES LAKE - A man tried to report his vehicle stolen after reportedly leading police on a pursuit and foot chase early Sunday morning in Moses Lake.

Moses Lake attempted to stop a Nissan Xterra for a headlight violation at about 3:15 a.m. in the area of West Virginia Street and Florida Street. The driver, later identified as 34-year-old Ryan Hughes, reportedly failed to stop and continued onto West Valley Road, according to Moses Lake police.

Hughes allegedly lost control of the SUV at the intersection of Valley and Rainier Road and drove off the road, hitting two road signs and continuing onto a sidewalk and across a lawn. Police say Hughes eventually stopped behind a residence on the 3600 block of Valley Road, where he exited the vehicle and ran.

While reportedly fleeing, Hughes dropped a bag that contained a card with his name on it, as well as a container with narcotics, according to Moses Lake police.

Deputy Ric Char and K9 Chicka responded and began tracking Hughes. During the track, Hughes reportedly called 911 dispatchers to report his SUV was stolen. The GPS location of the phone call traced back to a home in the 7800 block of Rainier Road, where Hughes was located and taken into custody.

Hughes was also a suspect in a Saturday evening vehicle prowl at the Moses Lake Safeway. Moses Lake police say a window was shattered on the victim’s vehicle and her purse stolen. Store security video reportedly shows Hughes and a female in the same Nissan Xterra involved in the pursuit parked next to the victim’s vehicle at the time of the car break-in.

Hughes was booked into Grant County Jail for felony eluding, hit-and-run, vehicle prowl and theft.
