MOSES LAKE - A local man was scammed out of his hard earned money after he fell for an old eBay scam, with an updated twist.

According to Moses Lake police, the man responded to an ad for a vehicle for sale on eBay. The seller contacted the buyer through the neighborhood app Nextdoor. Nextdoor is a social media site designed to help neighbors network and get to know each other.

"Because of the contact through Nextdoor, the buyer had the impression that the seller was local. He wasn’t. The buyer provided, at the seller’s request, payment in eBay cards. The deal was fraudulent, and there is a good chance the buyer won’t see his money again. We are again reminding people to do your due diligence when buying anything online," Moses Lake police stated in a Facebook post.

Moses Lake police urge caution whenever purchasing on any consumer to consumer site, and recommend face to face transactions whenever possible.

Police ended the post by saying, "And, before the keyboards get warmed up, the victim in this case is well aware of the mistakes he made, and has the lighter wallet to prove it. So, there is no reason to spend your time reminding him. Take the warning for what it is, then go outside and enjoy Spring by throwing a baseball or something."
