Mattawa crash

DESERT AIRE – Two people were killed in a head-on collision with a semi-truck early Saturday morning on state Route 243 about one mile south of Desert Aire.

Gerardo Sanchez-Medina, a 19-year-old Mattawa man, was driving 2000 Honda Civic north on SR 243. He reportedly crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound 2015 Freightliner semi-truck pulling two trailers, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Both vehicles came to rest in the ditch.

Sanchez-Medina and his passenger, 26-year-old Mattawa resident Eric Perez-Garcia, both died at the scene. Their families have been notified.

The driver of the semi-truck, 35-year-old Ryan Barr, was injured and taken to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland.

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation. State Route 243 was closed for about 10 hours.

Seems like we are seeing more and more accidents where the driver crossed over the center line or drifted off the road and over corrected. I'll wager that texting or other cell phone use was at fault.
