SOAP LAKE – Hydroplane races are returning to Soap Lake a bit earlier than previous years.
The fifth annual City of Soap Lake Hydroplane Regatta hits the lake May 20 and 21. The race has previously been held in mid-June.
About 30 boats are expected to compete Saturday and Sunday on the one and two-third mile course, from vintage boats and junior classes, to the inboard hydroplanes that can reach speeds well over 100 mph.
Spectators can line up along Smokiam Park to view the races which begin about 10:30 a.m. on both days. The races are free to watch.
People can also get an up-close look at the boats on Friday from noon to 5 p.m. in front of the sundial, and again on Saturday following the races.
The hydroplane races returned to Soap Lake in 2013 for the first time in more than 30 years.
