MALOTT — Okanogan County sheriff's deputies say a Malott man stabbed his mother to death Monday and struggled with a deputy before his arrest.

Jose Mejia, 34, was booked into the Okanogan County Jail on possible charges of second-degree murder, dangerous weapon possession, third-degree assault and resisting arrest. Authorities say his mother, 64-year-old Juana Ferreria Demejia, was pronounced dead after police and rescuers arrived to the stabbing call in the area of Old Highway 97 and Central Street about 2:45 p.m.

iFIBER ONE News partner KPQ Radio reports Mejia fled on foot and was confronted by deputies, attempting to disarm one of them in the ensuing struggle. He received a hand injury and was briefly treated at Mid Valley Hospital before his booking.
