EPHRATA – A Mattawa man will serve at least 25 years in prison after brutally raping his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter.
Juan P. Juarez, a 26-year-old Mattawa man, was sentenced in Grant County Superior Court Monday after pleading guilty to rape in the first degree and rape of a child in the first degree in December.
Prosecutor Angus Lee explained because of the age of the victim, Juarez faced a minimum of 25 years in prison.
“This court is aware of the facts … and, at this point, really has an understanding of really the horrific nature of this offense,” he said. “I’m not going to go into the details. They’re quite bad enough.”
Defense Attorney Ray Gonzales said Juarez knew about the sentence when he entered the guilty plea.
“He wished to proceed, enter his plea. He didn’t want any more damage to anyone else,” he said.
Juarez didn’t add anything.
Grant County Superior Court Judge Evan Sperline sentenced Juarez to the mandatory minimum, and he can’t have contact with the victim, her family or other minor children.
When Juarez finishes the minimum sentence, a Department of Corrections board will review his case, and decide whether he can be released. If he isn’t released, Juarez could serve life in prison.
On Nov. 10, 2012, Juarez began arguing with his girlfriend at the Mattawa home they shared. A to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the woman told investigators Juarez assaults her when they start arguing, so she left the house and went to her sister’s house.
She left behind her 5-year-old daughter. After the girlfriend was gone, Juarez raped the girl.
Police found blood-stained clothing, and blood on the walls. The girl was treated at Memorial Hospital for injuries related to the attack, which required surgery.
Juarez admitted to the attack, saying he wanted his girlfriend to know what it feels like to be cheated on.
