ELLENSBURG - Fredy Ruiz recorded a hat trick, Orlando Serrano added two scores and Quincy blanked the Bulldogs 5-0 in Ellensburg on a cold windy Tuesday afternoon.
The start of the contest was delayed an hour as an accident on I-90 had the westbound lanes closed. But it had little impact on the Jacks overall performance.
"After we had sat there for a while, I felt like I needed to relieve tension in the air, so I told the guys we were going to have to forfeit the game and take a loss," coach Arturo Guerra said. "They thought I was serious ... but after I told them I was just kidding ... they loosened up and were ready to get after it."
Serrano go the Jacks on the board in the 14th minute off an assist from Axel Medina. Back-to-back goals from Ruiz at the 17th and 35th minute of the fuss made it 3-0 at the half.
Serrano’s second score of the contest came in the 53rd minute of play. Ruiz rounded out the scoring with his third goal of the match off a Josh Munoz assist in the 70th minute of action.
Ellensburg threatened at the 74th minute when the Jacks fouled a Bulldog in the Quincy box. But Johan Farias blocked the PK to preserve the shutout.
"Johan committed the foul and really wanted a chance to redeem himself," Guerrero said. "He made a beautiful stop on the kick ... it was the highlight of the match."
The Jacks moves to 2-0-2 on the season with the win and will host Othello Saturday in a battle of the unbeaten in CWAC league play.
