YAKIMA – The Chiefs secured a spot in the state tournament after beating West Valley 76-51 but fell short of a district championship, losing to Davis 65-58.
Moses Lake’s Zach Phillips led the Chiefs with 30 points in Friday’s win against West Valley. Evan McLean added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Gio Walker had 11 points to go with 15 boards.
The Chiefs controlled the game early, taking a 13-4 lead after the first quarter and maintaining an 11-point lead at halftime. Moses Lake outscored West Valley 46-32 in the second half to earn a spot in the state playoffs and move on to Saturday’s district championship game.
In Saturday’s matchup, Moses Lake hit on 5-of-9 three-pointers in the first half to hold a 33-26 lead. The Chiefs led 41-31 early in the third quarter before Davis rallied, cutting the deficit to four at the start of the fourth.
Davis took a 50-46 lead with 5:52 to play and scored 11 of the next 13 points to pull away.
Phillips finished with 16 points and Ryan Karstetter added 14.
Moses Lake faces Richland on Friday at Chiawana High School to open state play. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
