MOSES LAKE – Zach Phillips poured in 30 points to lead the Chiefs over Sunnyside 73-67 Tuesday night in a district play-in game.
Phillips had 18 of his game-high 30 points in the second half, including 16 in the third quarter as Moses Lake moves on to play West Valley in Yakima on Friday. The Chiefs lost both matchups against West Valley during the regular season.
Moses Lake opened the game without a field goal more than four minutes into the first quarter but trailed just 6-3.
Giovanni Walker hit Moses Lake’s first field goal to start a 7-0 run for the Chiefs who led 13-11 after one.
A back-and-forth second quarter ended with a 24-23 lead for Moses Lake.
Phillips took over in the third, getting to basket with ease time-after-time in his 16-point quarter but three-point shooting from Sunnyside kept the Chiefs’ lead to just two heading into the fourth.
Moses Lake’s Ryan Karstetter was held scoreless until the fourth quarter when he poured in nine points, including seven straight points as the Chiefs opened up their largest lead of the game 71-62 with about 25 seconds left.
Evan McLean added 12 points and Walker had 11 in the win.
Sunnyside’s Trey Sanchez had a team-high 25 points, including 20 in the second half.
