EAST WENATCHEE – A brush fire destroyed property and threatened structures in East Wenatchee Thursday afternoon.
According to Douglas County Fire Marshal Kurt Blanchard, crews from Douglas County Fire District No. 2 and Chelan County Fire District No. 1 were dispatched to the 3100 block of 35th St. NE at 4:37 p.m.
Upon their arrival at the scene, firefighters discovered an active blaze burning in a row of arborvitae hedges adjacent to a residence.
Blanchard said the steep terrain and brisk winds made the fire more difficult to contain, but that crews were able to fully corral it rather quickly and prevent any damage to structures in the area, although a boat and an RV were heavily damaged and are being considered a total loss.
The fire is being considered accidental and is suspected to have been caused by repair work to an automobile that was being done by a minor nearby.
Blanchard told iFIBER ONE News that residents who have arborvitae near to their property should exercise extreme caution, since the decorative shrub is notorious for easily drying and out and contains natural oils which are highly flammable.
