OTHELLO (VIDEO) – Rankings typically go out the window when two formidable CWAC opponents go at each other on the gridiron.
And for the first half of Friday’s contest the Bulldogs were looking like anything but the No. 3 ranked 2A team in the state as Othello battled Ellensburg to a 7-7 score at the break.
Goose eggs dotted the scoreboard the first nine minutes of the game as both teams’ bend but don’t break defense turned back scoring threats.
The Huskies put the first crooked number on the board when quarterback Adrian Garza found Melvin Garza streaking down the Ellensburg sideline for a 75-yard touchdown (Miguel Gonzalez kick).
The Bulldogs responded with an 80-yard Gabe Caskey run (Christian Barrientos kick) to tie the game 7-all with under two minutes left in the first quarter.
The teams’ traded field position but were unable to put points on the board in the second 12 minutes of action.
Third quarter TD passes by Garrett Hull to Caskey and Brayton Leach made it 21-7 Ellensburg. Caskey’s 78-yard run for a score in the fourth quarter pushed the bulldog lead to 28-7.
Joe DeLeon’s rushing touchdown (PAT) brought the finally tally to 28-14.
Adrian Garza completed 11 of 28 passes for 262 yards, and Miguel Garza had three catches for 155 for Othello. Caskey finished with 286 rushing yards on 17 carries for Ellensburg.
